The city has a large concentration of surfboard shapers and manufacturers and numerous world-renowned surfers were raised in San Clemente or took up long-term residence in town. The best surfing beaches, to name a few, are Trestles, Lowers, T-Street and North Beach.
The Pier Bowl gets its name from the natural topographical “bowl” which distinguishes the area with the historic San Clemente Pier, restaurants, lodging and recreational area at the bottom of the bowl.
Located above Trestles, the “Western White House”, was President Richard Nixon’s vacation home. During his tenure many world leaders visited the estate and Nixon wrote his memoirs there after resignation.
