A Look Back: The History of the OC Fair

From Livestock Shows to Ferris Wheels, How the OC Fair Became a Beloved Summer Tradition

Every summer, the Orange County Fair brings a burst of energy to Costa Mesa; filled with concerts, carnival rides, deep-fried everything, and endless local flavor. But long before the fairgrounds were buzzing with music and funnel cakes, the OC Fair had humble beginnings rooted in agriculture and community.

From Humble Roots to a Summer Staple

The Orange County Fair got its start in 1890 in Santa Ana as a modest event focused on livestock shows and farm exhibits. Organized by the Orange County Community Fair Corporation, it served as a way for local farmers to show off their crops, cattle, and craftsmanship. There were no roller coasters or celebrity chefs, just the honest celebration of hard work and homegrown pride.

Over the decades, the fair grew in size and popularity. It moved to different locations several times before finding its permanent home at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa in 1949. By then, the fair had started to evolve from a purely agricultural showcase into something much bigger and a lot more fun.

The Fair Today: More Than Just Cotton Candy

Fast forward to today, and the OC Fair is one of the largest fairs in California, drawing over a million visitors each year. While agriculture is still a big part of the experience, it now includes live music performances, shopping, art exhibits, and, of course, outrageous food creations you won’t find anywhere else.

Each summer, families and friends flock to the fairgrounds to create new memories; whether that means catching a show in the hangar, trying something deep-fried on a stick, or watching the sun set from the top of the ferris wheel.

A True Celebration of Orange County

What makes the OC Fair so special is how it brings the community together. It’s a space where local artists, farmers, performers, and entrepreneurs can shine and where generations of Orange County residents come back year after year to relive their favorite summer tradition.
