A new year brings another rainy season to our normally sunny skies. We had quite a storm on Tuesday and early forecasts suggest rain may return to Orange County as soon as Saturday. However, the exact timing and intensity of the next round of precipitation was not immediately clear. But there are some steps you can take right now to protect your home. We’ve outlined some below, to help protect your home from future storms

Know Your Home’s Risk

If your home is in a high flood area, you may want to consider adding a flood insurance policy to your home insurance. Even if your home is in a low-moderate risk area, FEMA suggests that flood insurance can be extremely beneficial.

Seal Walls & Windows

Prevent seepage into your home by filling cracks in the walls, or near window seals.

Protect Vulnerable Areas of the Home

The Mercury News suggests getting plywood, duct tape, and plastic sheeting and using it to cover spots like a vent, window wells, the lower part of a sliding-glass door, or a crawl space. It’s helpful to keep those things on hand for the next weather event.

Repair Roof Leaks

If you’re noticing roof leaks right now, make sure to get them fixed as soon as you’re able to so you don’t have to deal with the same problem during the next one.

Clear Clogged Gutters & Loose Debris

FEMA also recommends you routinely clean and maintain gutters, downspouts, and splash pads. You’ll also want to check that nearby drainage ditches and storm drains are clear of debris.

Cut Weak Branches and Trees

For the next storm, make sure you cut anything that is vulnerable to falling on your home.
