Walter Johnson, founder of Southern California’s yacht brokerage, Walter Johnson Yachts, won the Lorin Weiss Memorial Series this past weekend. The event, named after the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club Staff Commodore Lorin Weiss, consists of three days of Harbor 20 racing with five races scheduled each day.

One of the more challenging races for even the most experienced sailors because all races in the series count towards the final score so consistency and commitment is the name of the game. Racers must stay in it to win and fight until the very end. Battling an equipment malfunction and a serious hand injury, it was shear grit and determination that got Walter and his crew through the middle series and ultimately finishing well ahead of their competitors.

“Winning the Lorin Weiss series has been a goal of mine for the past seven years,” says Walter. “It is a tremendous honor to be a part of the Weiss legacy.”

Known as the “boat whisperer”, Walter Johnson has sailed competitively and recreationally since the age of 12. Passionate about giving back to the sport he loves, Walter has participated in numerous charity events and was Chairman of the Lido 14 National Championships and Lido Isle Yacht Club (LIYC), Halloween Kids Regatta at LIYC and the Harry Wood Regatta at BYC.
